Govt decided to distribute tablets among high achieving students

Lahore: :18 July :Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Saturday that the government would launch a pilot health insurance scheme in four districts. It would be gradually extended to other districts. Data from NADRA would be used to ensure that only very poor people benefited from the scheme.

He announced this at meeting to discuss ongoing and new initiatives in the province. Ministers Rana Sanaullah, Tanveer Aslam Malik, Khalil Tahir Sindhu, the chief secretary, planning and development chairman and senior officers attended the meeting.

Considering the success of the laptop distribution programme, the government has decided to distribute tablets among high achieving students. Sharif said digital libraries would also be established in schools and colleges.

He said a solid waste management system would be extended to six other districts. It would be introduced in rural areas, he added.

He said that he had constituted a committee to make the internship programme more effective.The Express Tribune

AIOU, ITP join hands for quality education

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) and Islah Trust of Pakistan (ITP) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaboration for joint media production to meet the requirement of teachers and students who do not have access to quality education.

This initiative would empower and facilitate the students and teachers to have knowledge of the relevant syllabus through video network. Under the arrangement, the ITP has pledged to provide Rs 50 million to AIOU to prepare programmes covering units, contents and topics relating to all subjects for class 9 and 10. Initially, the video-based programme will be prepared for class 9.

The MoU was signed by AIOU Registrar Muhammad Bashir Chaudhry and ITP Member Board of Trustees Brig (R) Dr Maqsud Hassan and AIOU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Nazir Ahmed Sangi.

Speaking on the occasion, the VC expressed hope in the collaboration efforts between AIOU and ITP which will help provide access to quality education to all segments of society. He said, “The contents in the syllabus course would be designed in a manner that will help to reform the society in line with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).”

He ensured that the university would complete the task within a period of eighteen months laying greater focus on the quality of the work.

Furthermore, he said that the prime focus has been on quality and skill-based education in the recent years to prepare the young generation to participate in the nation-building task in an effective manner. He hoped for international recognition of AIOU on the basis of quality education from the Commonwealth of Learning.

Dr Maqsood Hassan said that the ITP was actively engaged to inspire the younger generation towards Islamic values and character building. “This initiative would benefit students and teachers alike who are deprived of quality education and proper infrastructure. It would empower the students and teachers living in rural areas, facilitating them through technology and e-based learning.” He appreciated the AIOU and the VC’s vision for their dedication towards providing quality education through distant learning.

IET Director Qasim Haider briefed the participants about the project which he said aims to respond to the ever growing needs in the education sector through application of multi-faceted element of digital technology. He said, “The project envisages developing media supplement for academic contents ranging from class 1 to 9. He highlighted its tremendous worth for students and learners, especially in remote and far flung areas faced with dearth of qualified teachers in different disciplines, lack of laboratories, libraries, IT connectivity and related resources.

SCOPE OF WORK

The University is seeking a dean for its College of Fine Arts and Design to commence work at the beginning of the academic year 2012/2013. The Dean reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and provides support for the mission and goals of the University of Sharjah as well as academic and administrative leadership for all programs within the College. The Dean further promotes excellence in teaching, scholarly research, and University and community service.

 

The Dean of the College is expected to demonstrate strong leadership and management skills in addition to vision, imagination and the ability to develop collaborative and interdisciplinary relationships with other local regional, national, and international institutions and organizations in order to advocate and represent the importance of Fine Arts and Design. Building on Arab, Islamic, and western traditions to further develop the reputation of the College, the Dean will work closely with the educational, creative and cultural sectors in Sharjah, Dubai and the other UAE emirates.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

-         Promoting the mission and goals of the College and University.

-         Overseeing the work of program coordinators, faculty and staff.

-         Overseeing faculty and staff hiring, evaluation, retention, and professional development.

-         Overseeing curriculum development, review, and assessment.

-         Working collaboratively with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and other deans to develop academic policies and plan for new facilities and technology.

-         Serving on the Deans Council and other governance bodies.

-         Fostering external relationships with community organizations and the media.

-         Overseeing College committees and nominations to College committees.

-         Planning, overseeing, and developing the College’s budget(s).

-         Leading accreditation initiatives.

-         Demonstrating cultural adaptability.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

The ideal candidate should be a proven leader with a solid record of teaching and scholarly/creative endeavor. The candidate must show evidence of active and consistent contribution to his/her field through publications in internationally recognized and peer-reviewed journals and through participation at exhibitions, conferences and other forums in addition to possessing the following degree qualifications and professional background:

-         A terminal degree (PhD or its equivalent), preferably in one of the disciplines of the College but ideally in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, Creative Arts, Performing Arts, and a demonstrated record of success in higher education administration.

-         A proven record of commitment to social engagement as well as significant experience in faculty/staff development and evaluation. Resource management, fund-raising, and strategic planning are preferred skills.

-         A full command of spoken and written English. (The ability to speak and/or write in Arabic is desirable but not required).

-         A clear vision for the development of higher education in Fine Arts and Design, familiarity with accreditation standards, and the experience to build upon and further develop undergraduate curricula and to establish appropriate new degree courses at the master’s level.

-         Experience in integrating teaching and learning strategies and program delivery.

-         Prior academic leadership and managerial experience at the level of dean/associate dean/program leader or the equivalent, in addition to strong interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate others to work together with a shared vision towards common goals.
